Lexus RX350h Executive: Quiet luxury on wheels

It confidently holds its ground against the influx of new rivals

Lexus as a brand with pedigree is already common knowledge. Nonetheless, the automaker’s hybrid system takes things up a notch, treading into quiet-luxury territory (quite literally).

With Lexus models, every detail does the talking, and things are no different for the RX350h Executive. From the grille to the rear LED lightbar, it is an ideally designed midsize luxury SUV. The base model comes with the signature Lexus spindle design, identical to its more jacked siblings, the Premier and the F-Sport Performance. However, the Executive does have an adequate number of upscale outer fixtures such as LED auto-leveling headlamps, foot and door handle illumination, and power-folding mirrors. While this particular unit has a Sonic Copper shade, there are a total of eight colors available for selection.

The interiors complement the exterior good looks with luxurious vegan leather upholstery on the ergonomic seats and the steering wheel. All seats are equipped with the convenience of power adjustment and lumbar support. The Executive variant offers power-folding seats for more cargo storage. In lieu of a third row, you get roomier trunk space. The e-Latch door knobs make for an interestingly innovative add-on. It allows for minimal effort to open or close all doors. From inside, a gentle push of the thumb will automatically open the car doors. Although the conventional pull lever is still an available option particularly in case of an emergency.

The driver’s multi-information display is fully digital. For the technology dependent, there is the option to switch to a digital rearview mirror. The infotainment system features a 9.8-inch touchscreen for all the wireless connection and customization controls, and for the air-conditioning. The device is both Apple CarPlay- and Android Auto-compatible, and is also Bluetooth-compliant. It’s equipped with a generous 12-speaker audio system, and wireless charging provisions.

The RX does deliver one of the most comfortable rides you will ever experience. The suspension is glorious and is at its peak performance navigating the less-than-ideal urban streets. On good roads, it can deliver decent power without the guilt, which is the perk of driving a hybrid. There are four drive modes: Normal, Sport, Eco, and Custom for maximum efficiency to suit various driving conditions. Fuel efficiency calculations gave us a good 12.8km/L for the drive around the city. Expect that to significantly improve on the highway.

Dynamic Cruise Control ensures a safe distance from surrounding obstructions at all times as the vehicle is supported by a built-in panoramic view monitor and intelligent sonar clearance capabilities. Other safety tools included are the automatic high beam, blind-spot monitoring, pre-collision, emergency braking, lane-tracing, and lane-departure assist systems.

The fuel efficiency that a A25A-FXS hybrid system offers—paired with the tried-and-tested 2.5-liter, in-line-four engine—is pretty much what this midsize SUV is all about. The Lexus RX prides itself on its high-power motor, which distributes power so evenly that there is absolutely no discomfort felt as it stores kinetic energy for the battery. None of that sudden jerking motion—only a smooth but efficient ride. It walks the talk, given how remarkably tranquil this car can run. Priced at P4,838,000, it’s luxury with efficiency.
