Wheeltek Motor Sales Corporation is well known in the local motorcycle community, and why not? The company is a multibrand dealership that sells such purveyors of two-wheeled machines as Honda, Kawasaki, Yamaha, Suzuki, KTM and TVS. Whether you want the smallest-displacement bike to scoot your way in and out of traffic, or need a big liter bike to tell everyone to get out of the way, these guys have got something for you.

Now, as the firm celebrates its 45th year in the business, it has decided to add the world’s baddest motorcycle brand to its stable: Harley-Davidson. The store is located in one of the cradles of the Philippine Revolution: Cavite. Hence the dealership’s logo design showing three stars and the sun. In fact, the owners of Wheeltek convinced Harley-Davidson to have this logo customized, and to christen the branch as “Wheeltek Harley-Davidson of Cavite.” That’s the kind of persuasion a dealership network of more than 200 stores usually wields.

Throughout its 116 years of existence, Harley-Davidson has had ups and downs, but you’d be hard-pressed to find someone who doesn’t know the brand. As a child, when I would think of motorcycles, a picture of a Harley-Davidson would be the image that would pop in my head. When the other motorcycle brands started making smaller and more efficient bikes, HD said: “Screw that…let’s stick to our guns.” Or something like that. That mindset got them in trouble for a bit, but they rose again and got stronger because of it.

As we walked around the entire store, Wheeltek officers showed us various Harley-Davidson models, the lifestyle merchandise corner, the parts section, the immaculate service area and the lounge. And then they let us have a go on five different bikes: the Sportster Forty-Eight, the Street Bob Softail, the Sportster SuperLow, the Sportster Iron and the Fat Bob Softail. Of course, I got the largest one, the Fat Bob!

Not going to lie: I was terrified to get on this bulky bike, but if you’re going big, you may as well get the biggest one available. As we peeled off the showroom, I had a noob moment as I didn’t know where to put my feet. It was unlike any bike I had ever ridden. I had to look down, and that was when I noticed my feet had gone farther in front than I was used to. The police escort then led us to an open stretch of road where we were able to gun it. Being a novice rider, however, I just chose to admire the thing and cruise along. I really did feel the Fat Bob’s road presence, and I started waving back at the bystanders taking photos of it.
