Lewis Hamilton’s transfer to Ferrari had big consequences for Formula 1’s driver market. It meant that his seat in Mercedes-AMG would be vacant, and that Carlos Sainz had to find a new team. And that team is now Williams.
The Grove-based constructor has announced that the Spaniard will be racing for it in 2025 and 2026, the latter of which will see new regulations. Sainz will be partnering with Alex Albon—both of them former Red Bull drivers.
Sainz’s decision must not have been easy, going from a top team in Ferrari to choosing among three backmarkers. Compared to Sauber and Alpine, at least Williams appears to have stability and continuity with James Vowles as team principal.

“I am very happy to announce that I will be joining Williams Racing from 2025 onward,” said Sainz. “It is no secret that this year’s driver market has been exceptionally complex for various reasons, and that it has taken me some time to announce my decision. However, I am fully confident that Williams is the right place for me to continue my F1 journey, and I am extremely proud of joining such a historic and successful team, where many of my childhood heroes drove in the past and made their mark on our sport. The ultimate goal of bringing Williams back to where it belongs—at the front of the grid—is a challenge that I embrace with excitement and positivity.”
With Sainz signing up for Williams, does this mean Kimi Antonelli will be taking the seat at Mercedes-AMG? Also, are things looking bleak for a regular driver stint for Logan Sargeant?
