Amid a volatile driver market that began with Lewis Hamilton’s move to Ferrari, here is probably the least exciting news. Aston Martin has just confirmed that Lance Stroll will be racing with the team for 2025 and beyond with Fernando Alonso as his teammate.
To sum up the profile of this Canadian Formula 1 driver, Stroll is someone known more for his father’s wealth than his skills behind the wheel—a pay driver. Although he managed to win the 2016 Formula 3 European Championship, it’s no secret that his silver spoon is what allowed him to get into F1 and stay there up until now.
Some reports claim that Lawrence Stroll paid Williams $80,000,000 for his son’s F1 debut in 2017. That was never officially confirmed, but one thing for sure is that Lance’s future was secured the moment his dad bought Force India, which was rebranded as Racing Point before becoming Aston Martin.
Despite having been in the sport longer than young guns such as Charles Leclerc, George Russell, and Lando Norris, Stroll hasn’t made as big of an impact. He has had great teammates such as Sergio Perez, Sebastian Vettel, and Alonso, yet he hasn’t proven his worth in the head-to-head battles.
With Honda coming in as Aston Martin’s power-unit supplier for 2026, fans were speculating that Yuki Tsunoda would join, too, given his connection with the Japanese manufacturer. However, it appears that the door is closed.
If you have doubts about Stroll, here’s what his team principal has to say. “He has played a key role in building this team, and his technical feedback, alongside his committed simulator work, has helped contribute to the continuous development of the car each season,” said Mike Krack. “The consistency and the stability of both Lance and Fernando remaining with our team are a great platform to continue to realize our ambitions. We look forward to creating some incredible memories and achieving further success together.”
