In 1974, turbocharging was limited to marine engines, locomotives, and piston-powered aircraft. But Porsche came up with a design for a turbo small enough to be shoved inside the rear end of its 911. It has never looked back, and the automaker is celebrating 50 years of forced induction with a special version of the vehicle that started it all.
It is christened the 911 Turbo 50 Years, and it has various touches that set it apart from the Turbo S upon which it is based. For one, a new color aptly called Turbonite makes its debut on this car. It is used on the massive “turbo” side decals, the engine cover, and on the vehicle’s rear-mounted badge.
The Turbonite center-lock wheels come from Porsche’s Exclusive Design catalog, and are standard equipment on the Turbo 50 Years. Complementing it are exterior trim pieces that come in Anthracite Gray as a nod to history. Topping everything off is the special emblem that features a turbo graphic.
As expected, Turbonite makes its presence known inside the cockpit with seatbelts, stitching, and switchgear being painted in this hue. But arguably, the most eye-catching element of the interior is the tartan pattern on the seat inlays and the door cards. The design is inspired by the cabin of early 911 Turbo models. A themed Sport Chrono timer takes center stage on top of the dashboard.
Speaking of timing, buyers of the 911 Turbo 50 Years will receive a special Porsche Design chronograph. Running on the watchmaker’s WERK 01.200 movement with a flyback function, its dial and leather strap have contrasting elements in—you guessed it—Turbonite. Behind the transparent cover is a winding rotor modeled after the wheel design.
Interestingly, Porsche has decided to keep this special 911’s performance numbers identical to the Turbo S. The flat-six engine has two turbos bolted to it and is good for 641hp at the crank. The eight-speed PDK dual-clutch gearbox can launch the car to 100km/h in just 2.7 seconds. The active suspension system sits 10mm lower, and carbon-ceramic brakes come with the package.
While the 911 Turbo 50 Years already looks good in standard form, Porsche is offering plenty of customization options and a Heritage Design Package for a classic look. But anyone interested should place their orders now as only 1,974 units of this special car (and its matching watch) will be produced.
