Here’s your first look at the Toyota GR GT before its unveil

Wrapped in darkness is the future of Gazoo Racing

For years, Toyota has been hyping its new GT sports car to elevate the Gazoo Racing brand into greater heights. We saw a glimpse of it back in 2022 via the GR GT3 Concept, and test prototypes have been spotted around the Nurburgring and the Goodwood Festival of Speed.

On November 27, a peculiar commercial aired on Japanese primetime television, featuring a vintage Toyota 2000GT racer and a Lexus LFA Nurburgring Edition racing across a banked corner. After the V10 symphony, a mysterious two-door lurked in the shadows while screaming an equally boisterous note.

Faintly in the dark, many could see the name of Toyota’s new sports car, the GR GT, alongside the world premiere slated for December 5. Fans speculate that it will feature a new twin-turbocharged V8 engine, possibly combined with a hybrid system for added efficiency and torque.

Interestingly, many were surprised to see the TGR branding and expected this to be solely a Lexus model, as it is set to replace the RC F GT3 after eight years in sports car racing. This could mean one of two things: Toyota will either retain its main brand in series like the World Endurance Championship, or wear the L emblem in other regions, similar to past rebadging practices.

Either way, we will have to wait until Friday for the grand reveal of Toyota’s future in motorsports and car culture. Will the GR GT truly capture and express the essence and the soul of its legendary predecessors that have left a mark in Japanese automotive history? Sounds to us like it’ll be a winner.
