The new Surly Moonlander claims to be the thickest fat bike around

With 6.2-inch-wide tires and a Pinion gearbox

Have you ever wanted a bicycle for extraterrestrial terrain? Well, Surly has just launched the new Moonlander.

Unlike mountain bikes with suspension forks, fat bikes have high-volume tires—usually four inches or wider—for loose surfaces such as rocks, snow, and sand. With a bike like this, no terrain can stop you from rolling over it.

The updated fat bike is said to be the fattest one yet, with 24-inch by 6.2-inch Surly Molenda tires wrapped around 100mm Surly Clown Royal rims.

The frame is made of chromoly steel with a sloping top tube to maximize standover height, and a high head tube for a comfortable riding position.

Should you want a different wheel size, the Moonlander has clearances for the following tires: 24-inch by 6.25-inch, 26-inch by 5.1-inch, 27.5-inch by 4.8-inch, and 29-inch by 3.0-inch.

Shifting is done via an ultra-low-maintenance nine-speed Pinion gearbox—the first time in Surly’s history. Meanwhile, stopping power is provided by Tektro HD-M285 hydraulic brakes.

Other features include fender and rack mounts for cargo-hauling as well as a dropper post, which lets the rider adjust the saddle height on the fly.

The Surly Moonlander is available as a built bike with an SRP of $4,199 (P237,300). Given that Surly has local dealers, it doesn’t seem impossible that this fat bike will arrive on Philippine shores eventually.

If you got the chance to ride a bicycle like this, where would you take it?
