A fire broke out at a food company in Tanauan City, Batangas, yesterday afternoon, with a flammable chemical being suspected as the source of the conflagration.

The flames reached the stockyard of MG Philippines (aka SAIC Motor Philippines), where 200-plus units of the MG3 Hybrid and the MG 4 EV were burned. Both vehicles have lithium-ion batteries.

According to MG Philippines PR head Uzzi Asuncion, “not a single one of the batteries exploded, and the fire was put out quickly.”

The stockyard is located at Lot 10A First Industrial Township in Barangay Pagaspas, Tanauan City.

MG Philippines has released a statement to address the matter:

“Our lithium-ion EV batteries undergo rigorous testing before installation,” Asuncion added. “They are also wrapped around protective casing, and go through what we call the ‘needle test,’ ensuring no internal short-circuiting happens. This is why we remain confident that our EV batteries will adhere to the highest safety standards.”

Needless to say, this was an unfortunate event. But at least, MG was able to show that its electrified vehicles are safe—none of those “explosive” objects people imagine them to be from watching YouTube videos.
