How to convince your partner to let you buy a motorcycle

This strategy is tried and tested

One of the main reasons cited for discouraging motorcycle ownership is safety. While it’s true that motorcycling carries inherent risks, so does driving a car or even riding a bicycle. Ultimately, safety depends on the rider.

If you’re dreaming of hitting the open road but your better half is hesitant, here are some proven tips to help you shift gears and get her blessing.

1. Share your dream riding destination—and include her! Paint a vivid picture of your ideal motorcycle adventure, and make sure she’s in it. Don’t just talk about the thrill of the ride—emphasize how it will enhance your relationship. Describe romantic getaways, weekend escapes from the kids, and shared experiences that will create lasting memories. Highlight how motorcycling can bring you closer, offering opportunities to enjoy beautiful scenery, escape traffic, and explore hidden gems that are only accessible with two wheels.

2. Prioritize safety (and prove it). Address her safety concerns head-on. Enrolling in a reputable riding school is crucial, not only for your peace of mind but also for hers. Consider institutions like Motorclyde Training Center, Motorcycle Riding School Philippines by Mel Aquino, Ducati Riding Experience, or Honda Safety Driving Center. Completing a professional course demonstrates your commitment to safe riding practices, and will significantly ease her worries.

3. Gear up together (and let her choose). Shopping for riding gear is an excellent opportunity to involve your partner. Don’t just buy gear for yourself; bring her along to fit helmets, jackets, pants, and other essential safety equipment. Let her experience the process and choose her own gear. This not only makes her feel included, but also increases her understanding of the importance of safety. You might even be surprised: She might just swipe that card for you.

4. Join riding groups with couples (and find your tribe). Couple rider groups are a growing trend, offering a fantastic way to connect with like-minded individuals and enjoy shared riding experiences. Joining a group allows you to meet new people, create unique bonding activities with other couples, and demonstrate that motorcycling can be a social and enjoyable activity for both of you.

5. The ultimate move: her own bike. If possible, consider buying her a motorcycle as well. Enroll in riding classes together and embark on this adventure side-by-side. Sharing the experience of learning and riding will not only strengthen your bond, but also create a shared passion that you can enjoy for years to come.

This approach is tried and tested. With a little planning, patience, and a focus on safety, you can transform your dream of motorcycle ownership into a reality—perhaps even with your partner by your side.

Maki is completely obsessed with motorcycles. If he’s not out there riding all over the Philippines, he’s just probably at home composing another rant, or simply looking at new bikes on the Internet. He writes the ‘First to Arrive’ column.
