In compliance with President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.’s mandate to promote active transportation, the Department of Transportation (DOTr) has expanded the bike-lane network in Angeles, Pampanga.

A total of 11.1km of bike lanes was constructed along MacArthur Highway from San Jacinto Rotunda to J. Valdez Street, and along FilAm Friendship Highway from Poinsettia Avenue to Don Juico Avenue. These fall under Class 2 bike lanes, which are delineated via pavement markings or flexible bollards.

According to DOTr secretary Banoy Lopez, the DOTr is working closely with the Angeles LGU to deploy traffic enforcers to enforce the speed limit. This is a great initiative to make the roads safer for cyclists and other vulnerable road users. But if the LGU wants to make its job easier, perhaps it could also consider placing protective barriers instead of just paint, where applicable.

The Philippines has a long way to go on the road to becoming bicycle-friendly, but we have reason to stay optimistic. As of Q1 2026, the DOTr has a total of 1,100km of bike lanes nationwide. The agency aims to expand that to 2,400km by 2028.
