Toll Regulatory Board will finally trial contactless-only payment

We are slowly bidding farewell to the cash lane

For what felt like an eternity, the shift to 100% cashless transactions at tollbooths was initially promised in 2020 during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic. Starting September 1, the Toll Regulatory Board will finally conduct a dry run of this program at select entrances and exits.

If anyone remembers, the Department of Transportation first announced the cashless revolution for all expressway tollbooths on August 13, 2020. Due to criticisms regarding RFID scanning errors, the program was pushed further until January 29, 2021, but nothing concrete came up until now.

After evaluating 852 toll lanes along the various expressways in Luzon, 717 have passed the 98% readability rate, while the remaining booths will maintain their cash lanes until full ETC conversions are complete.
