Porsche Design is the premium lifestyle brand that embodies all of the qualities Porsche is known for. It marks its 50th anniversary this year, and to celebrate, it is coming out with two versions of the timepiece that started it all: the Chronograph I.
The first piece is called the Chronograph I – 911 Edition 50Y Porsche Design which is the watch made exclusively for the 750 buyers of the 911 Edition 50Y Porsche Design. Thankfully, for us mere mortals who cannot afford to buy that special edition vehicle, there is the Chronograph I – 1972 Limited Edition.
The 1972 Limited Edition is a faithful reissue of the legendary timepiece. Its 40.8mm case and bracelet are made out of titanium and finished in handsome matte black. It is also water resistant up to 100m.
The matte black design also extends to the watch face, protected by sapphire glass with anti-reflective coating. The chronograph dial, with its three subdials, lumen hour markers, and bilingual date window, mimics the appearance of the first Chronograph I, using the original Porsche Design font and logo from 1972 and featuring the iconic red second hand.
Instead of an ancient Valjoux 7750 movement, there is a modern Porsche Design caliber WERK 01.140. It is certified by the Contrôle Officiel Suisse des Chronomètres (COSC) and has a power reserve of 48 hours. Interestingly, the rotor is also finished in matte black and is dotted with the modern Porsche Design logo albeit a little hard to spot.
Fortunately, we do not have to buy the 911 Edition 50Y to get this timepiece. Unfortunately, it is limited to 500 pieces and comes at an eye-watering price of €6,972,000 (P407,500). If you do decide to order one, deliveries will take place between January and March 2022.
