The car is on display at BMW Welt until January 2025

If you’ve ever played racing games in the 1990s and 2000s, it’s hard to miss the Need for Speed (NFS) series. Need for Speed: Most Wanted is one of the most iconic entries, combining open-world gameplay with intense police chases the franchise is known for.

In celebration of the franchise’s 30th anniversary, an actual BMW M3 GTR race car has been modified to look like the poster car from the 2005 game.

A brief history lesson: The E46 M3 was launched back in 2000. As expected, BMW took it racing in different motorsports series. However, its in-line-six engine was uncompetitive in the American Le Mans Series (ALMS) GT category.

So, the German marque replaced the S54 motor with the P60B40 V8 engine. And to meet homologation standards, BMW made 10 units of the M3 GTR Strassenversion with the same engine.

The replica was made using the #42 M3 GTR driven by Jörg Müller and JJ Lehto in the 2001 ALMS GT category, with Müller winning the drivers’ title and BMW Motorsport securing the constructors’ championship.

The folks at BMW were kind enough to bring this historic race car out of storage and allowed it to be vinyl-wrapped to resemble the NFS car. The best part: You can see it in the metal at BMW Welt in Munich, Germany, until January 2025.
