One of the more interesting vehicles shown at the recent Philippine International Motor Show was the Changan Hunter REEV pickup. The acronym means “range-extended electric vehicle.” As such, this pickup is run by a dual electric motor rated at 268hp and 470Nm of torque.
It has a 2.0-liter turbocharged powertrain, but it acts like a generator. Like the same setup found on the Nissan Kicks, only more powerful and more enduring. This engine is paired with a 70L fuel tank.
The electric motor draws power from a 31.18kWh, and its pure electric range is touted to be 180km.
Together with the range-extending ICE, the Hunter REEV is said to cover a distance of 1,031km.
Expected to be offered in our market in the first quarter of 2025, the Hunter will also have ICE versions. But this REEV edition—which is four-wheel-drive, by the way—is targeted to be priced below P2,000,000.
This vehicle is equipped with a GB/T charger that can quick-charge the battery to 80% in 30 minutes.
Now, in terms of payload, the Hunter REEV is no match for the usual one-ton pickup, as it only has a payload capacity of 495kg. Bear this in mind when you consider this for your next utility vehicle.
Then again, one look at the modern styling and you will realize that this is not meant to be a hardcore workhorse. If that is what you need, I suggest you get a regular ICE-powered Hunter.
Is a range-extended EV pickup worth the price that Changan will charge for it? Browse the list of features at the end of this piece, and tell us what you think.
