Despite being the most sought-after vehicle segment, the pickup truck has yet to make an electric-powered splash on the Philippine market. Changan Philippines wants to spark that untouched sector by previewing a model at this year’s Philippine International Motor Show.
The Changan Hunter is an electric pickup truck powered by a range extender, similar to the Nissan Kicks. Its body-on-frame chassis is based on an existing model in China called the F70, which was also rebadged as the Peugeot Landtrek.
The powerhouse is a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder gasoline engine charging a 31.18kWh battery pack mounted on the undercarriage. The single-motor RWD variant produces 174hp and 320Nm, while the dual-motor AWD variant has 268hp and 470Nm.
On pure electric power, the Hunter can go up to 180km. But a full tank with a full charge will allow it to travel as far as 1,031km. The payload and the towing capacities are limited to 495kg and 2,268kg, respectively, because of the comfort-oriented front double-wishbone and rear multilink suspension.
The tailgate can be accessed in two ways: half-open for quick grabs, and fully open where the tailgate can be converted into a step board. On the expansive bed is a double 220V socket for the 3.3kW vehicle-to-load feature.
The dashboard has a 7.5-inch digital instrument cluster and a 12-inch infotainment touchscreen with a wireless charging pad and handlebars running down the middle. Safety features are kept simple with a 360° camera, rear parking sensors, and lane-departure warning.
Changan Philippines aims to bring the Hunter REEV to the market by the end of Q1 2025 with pricing below P2,000,000. Targeting the likes of the Ford Ranger Wildtrak and the Mitsubishi Triton Athlete, could this electrified truck charge through an iconic segment?
