Polyphony Digital will partner with Sony Honda Mobility for vehicle development

You’ll also be able to drive the Afeela virtually on ‘Gran Turismo 7’

We’re entering a time when big tech companies are building vehicles of their own. Sony has been at it for a while, partnering with companies like Honda to build cars. The result of this partnership is the Afeela EV, which was announced in January 2023 at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas.

This partnership makes complete sense, if you ask us. SCREENSHOT FROM SONY

While it’s still a long while before the production-ready variant of the car will be ready in mid-2026, it seems that there has been an exciting new development as SHM now has partnered with Polyphony Digital, the maker of the beloved Gran Turismo video games, to aid with “real world vehicle development.”

From being contracted to build the virtual gauges of the Nissan GT-R (R35), Polyphony Digital will now be assisting in the research-and-development of the Afeela EV.

SHM says it will “combine Polyphony Digital’s simulation technology with the development of actual vehicles by SHM.” This may not sound like much on the surface, but it’s a huge milestone for the video game maker.

Sony Honda Mobility has also released several new key specifications of the car.

It will measure 4,915mm long, 1,900mm wide, and 1,460mm tall, with a wheelbase of 3,000mm. It will have a dual-motor setup with a combined power output of 360kW (482hp), and be powered by a 91kWh lithium-ion battery that supports up to 150kW of charging. It rides on a set of staggered 21-inch wheels, and will have air suspension to keep things level.

And as a little bonus, Gran Turismo 7 players will be able to drive the vehicle virtually with an upcoming patch later this year. Are you excited for the Afeela?
