Judging from its current product portfolio, one might say that Toyota doesn’t think outside the box too much. But it could not have survived for as long as it has if it didn’t have a couple of guys willing to push the boundaries of automotive engineering just for kicks. And at the 2024 Philippine International Motor Show, the company is showing the world that it could be a little mad if it wanted to.

KAYOIBAKO. Arguably the most eye-catching vehicle on display, the Kayoibako is Toyota’s take on a future multipurpose vehicle. Within its boxy body shell is a blank canvas that can be configured in many ways to suit the user’s needs. Allowing this small van to have so much capacity is an electric powertrain.

BZ4X. It’s a name that’s hard to say and equally annoying to type, so it isn’t really a good match for a mass-produced electric vehicle. Still, props to Toyota for even making it as the company is often accused of being late to the BEV game. While not for sale locally, the automaker is likely testing the waters for consumer demand for this vehicle.

TAMARAW. What used to be the IMV 0 concept is now something that can be bought by Filipinos. Just like its name, the Tamaraw is proudly built in the country and can be tailored to a wide variety of applications. Have a look at some of the possible uses of the platform at the show.

COROLLA CROSS H2. This may look like a regular Corolla Cross, but underneath the hood is technology that might just keep the piston engine alive for generations to come. Hydrogen combustion is something that Toyota has been experimenting with for a few years, with the hope of making it mainstream in the future.
