When you think of the name Maybach, you think of opulent limousines that are best enjoyed from the back seat.
But it seems the brand has found that some of its customers also like to be a little more hands-on. Those wealthy petrolheads can now go topless with the marque’s latest creation, the Mercedes-Maybach SL 680 Monogram Series.
This SL is basically the convertible for people who want to stand out from the normal Mercedes crowd. Calling it a pimped-up Chedeng might sound like a bit of an insult, but that’s pretty much what it is.
The main differences to a normal SL are in the added bling and various bits to make it more comfortable. Plus, Maybach logos. Loads and loads of Maybach logos.
Unveiled at the Monterey Car Week, this plush, al fresco cruiser was presented in two versions: Red Ambience and White Ambience.
Both are two-tone designs that either combine red with black, or white with black—whereby both cars feature a white leather interior that looks like it would be a nightmare to keep clean. Not that the owner of such a car would ever worry about such mundane tasks.
He or she would be way too busy enjoying the ways this luxo-barge has been tweaked to justify its yet-to-be-announced price tag.
Starting on the outside, it has been given a new paint job, and the hood is now adorned with countless Maybach logos. The front air intake also contains a good number of Maybach logos, as does the fabric roof.
Just in case the many logos aren’t enough of a clue, then a new Maybach grille, new wheels, and Maybach taillights give an extra clue. If there’s a record for most brand logos on a single car, then this SL almost certainly wins it.
Under the hood sits a 4.0-liter biturbo V8 that produces 585hp and 800Nm of torque, and has been sent to finishing school complete with the rest of the car.
While AMG versions are all about pops and bangs and brutal performance, this one has been taught some gentle manners, and it comes with softened suspension, a noise-optimized exhaust system, more insulation, and soft engine mounts.
Combined with a 9G-Tronic gearbox and 4matic+ all-wheel drive, a step on the rightmost pedal should move you toward the horizon like a fluffy cloud.
To ensure you can show off that you own a Maybach even when the car is out of sight, the firm will also sell you a full range of accessories—from clothing to luggage and even a dog bag.
Basically, whatever you need to show the world that you have plenty of dosh, Mercedes-Maybach will sell it to you. Expect to see the Maybach open top in Monaco, London, and Alabang soon.
