Today, NAIAX will officially have speed limit of 80km/h

Study ‘shows’ it will benefit motorists compared to the previous 60km/h constraint

Today, January 15, SMC Infrastructure is officially implementing an 80km/h speed limit for the NAIA Expressway (NAIAX). This will supersede the previous 60km/h limit.

Also, on January 20, straight sections of Skyway Stage 3 will have the same speed limit.

In explaining the new speed limit, SMC boss Ramon S. Ang said in a press release: “This change will make travel on NAIAX and Skyway Stage 3 faster and more efficient for everyone. We have carefully studied this to make sure that it benefits motorists while prioritizing safety.”

These expressways had to have a lower speed limit from the beginning to accommodate the constructions being carried out in the affected sections—especially those with right-of-way issues.

Ang clarified, however, that a 60km/h speed limit would remain in the curved sections of the two expressways.

“This is to maintain safety, as we do not want to put any motorists at risk of accidents due to miscalculation or oversteering, especially where there are sharp curves, given the limitations to the design of both NAIAX and Skyway 3,” he added.

If you think SMC Infra isn’t serious about enforcing these speed limits, you need to know that LTO-deputized traffic marshals equipped with radar speed guns will be tasked to catch violators. Yes, they are authorized to confiscate drivers’ licenses at toll exits, in case you’re wondering.

Consider yourself informed and warned then. Stay safe and efficient.
