Bell Racing has rolled out SmartLock, its patented, side-positioned visor-locking system for full-face helmets. The system meets the latest FIA safety requirements for auto racing helmets. Apart from the standards of the FIA, Bell racing helmets are also Snell-certified.

With its dedication to head protection, the new SmartLock system is an advancement in helmet safety design. Assessments collected from drivers from different international categories running various trials were key factors to the final result.

The SmartLock system was tested by two-time world champion Fernando Alonso at the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, the final race of this year’s Formula 1 season. Alonso was presented with the first Bell Racing HP77 model certified by the FIA with the SmartLock system. Testing it for the first time, the Aston Martin driver sampled the integration of the visor-locking system with his helmet, as well as aerodynamic efficiency during the race.

The lock mounted on the side not only has better strength in the event of a high-speed crash, but it also frees up the driver’s line of sight compared to the customary central-mounted lock—whether the visor is closed or open (for the need to defog, for instance). What’s more, it’s easy to lock and unlock with one hand. A crucial consideration is for the rescue team to be able to quickly unlock the visor in an accident.

SmartLock will be steadily implemented in Bell Racing’s range of FIA 8859-2024 and 8860-2024 homologated full-face helmets, in order to undergo the transition for the time being. This period is compatible with the forthcoming FIA standards.

“Bell Racing Helmets has delivered a solution that once again sets a new benchmark for helmet performance and function in motorsport,” shares Racing Force chief technical officer Andy Mellor. “The launch of SmartLock is a testament to our commitment to advancing designs while persevering the legacy of our brand. Fernando Alonso debuting the SmartLock system on his Bell Racing helmet demonstrates the confidence this system is gaining at the top levels of motorsport.”
