Toyota equips GR Corolla with automatic transmission

Japanese hot hatch also gets a bump in engine torque

Earlier this year, Toyota made a bold move in equipping the GR Yaris hot hatch with an automatic transmission. The automaker claims that its eight-speed gearbox can deliver the same driving feel as the six-speed manual. In fact, the company feels so confident about its high-tech slushbox that the same technology is now in the GR Corolla.

The obvious advantage of having eight ratios is the ability to keep the revs hovering within the engine’s power band. Toyota also guarantees gear changes that are faster than any manual transmission can manage. The gearbox’s software can time the shifts based on the driver’s braking and acceleration patterns.

Toyota has also updated the GR Corolla’s bumper to accommodate a cooler for the transmission fluid. Speaking of keeping things cool, the front end gets brake ducts and a secondary radiator. The 300hp G16E-GTS engine now has a healthy increase in torque, so it needs every bit of help in maintaining a safe operating temperature.

The GR Corolla also receives revisions to its suspension components. Built-in rebound springs in the dampers reduce lift on the inside wheel, which improves cornering stability. Different spring rates and a redesigned mount for the rear trailing arm further enhance overall balance during high lateral loads.

In the US at least, the automatic GR Corolla doesn’t spell the death of its manual-equipped twin as both options will be offered. Toyota sees this as an effective way for its lineup of enthusiast cars to be enjoyed and appreciated by a wider variety of buyers.
