A team in the UK has just managed to drive a big electric SUV over 900km on a single charge, setting a new world record in the process: 916.74km. That’s how far the team of two drivers and one copilot managed to travel in a Mustang Mach-E Premium Extended Range SUV RWD Auto Edition. They beat the previous record, held by a Chinese-made Zeekr last September, by a little over 9km and showed just how far EVs have come.
What makes the feat even more impressive is the fact that they didn’t do it in a closed venue or under controlled conditions like other record attempts, but while driving around a mix of urban and rural roads in England.
Doing it under real-world conditions adds a lot more weight to this record, which was completed while averaging 10.05km/kWh. If you tried to convert that into ICE terms, you’d be looking at over 88km/L of fuel, which is impressive in anyone’s book.
It took the three guys 24 hours to drain the battery of the electric pony car right down to zero, and they did so while rolling along on 18-inch rims wrapped in Bridgestone EV rubber.
The tire firm was also one of the sponsors of the event, and its fleet management arm, Webfleet, provided the technology to verify the record. To do this, video footage, odometer readings, GPS data, and battery level data were independently verified to make sure everything was aboveboard.
The Mach-E was equipped with a 91kWh battery pack, and it has a stated WLTP range of 600km.
To squeeze that much more range out of it takes some considerable skill, which drivers Kevin Brooker and Sam Clarke certainly brought along. Brooker is an experienced hypermiler who holds a total of five world records for efficient EV driving, while Clarke currently holds the world record for longest drive on one charge in an electric van.
