When the market leader makes the slightest of movements, everyone has to pay attention. In fact, even if it doesn’t even concern a bestseller and it’s so minor it won’t even shake the sales charts, the industry still needs to be mindful of the activity. That’s the reality of the game.
So when Toyota Motor Philippines—rightful owner of half of the market—tweaks the Corolla Altis 1.8 GR-S HEV sedan, you just notice. Heck, the carmaker could simply change the wheels and that would be news (see last facelift).
This time, it seems the makeover is more newsworthy.
First off, the grille and the front bumper are new. We like these. They are cleaner and better put-together.
At the back, there is now a black spoiler. The taillights are smoked, and the accent is blackened.
The decals (side and rear) now display “HEV” instead of “HYBRID.” We just don’t know which one is actually more effective in convincing traffic officers that you are exempt from the number-coding.
Inside, we’re not sure about what was touched (if at all). But the presentation in the press photos is elegant.
Finally, the slightly adjusted price: From the previous 2024 price of P1,730,000, the Corolla Altis 1.8 GR-S HEV is now P1,755,000. And as usual, this top variant is available only in one color, Platinum White Pearl Mica.
Will the compact sedan market be bothered by this? If this were another car brand doing this, maybe no. But…this is Toyota. Market leader. Rightful owner of half of the market.
