One look at the recently launched Ford F-150 and you’d immediately think that it is the king of pickups in the country. But the truth is that underneath the vehicle’s chrome trim and myriad of gadgets is a diesel truck that will trundle along at a relaxed pace even if you push it. But Ram has just launched its newest addition that has both the capability and the attitude.
It’s called the 1500 TRX. It’s a proper monster truck, this thing, because of the massive 6.2-liter supercharged Hemi V8 under the hood. Planting your right foot makes the supercharger whine like a bad-tempered cat to the tune of 702hp and 881Nm. If these figures sound familiar, that’s because the engine comes from the famed Dodge Hellcat line. This V8 can push the TRX to 60mph (97km/h) in just 4.5 seconds.
One big giveaway of the TRX’s size are the three orange lights located on the hood scoop. This is a regulatory requirement by the US Department of Transportation for vehicles that exceed 2m in width. Aside from heft, the TRX intimidates in style with a massive front grille that looks large enough to eat anything reckless enough to block its path.
The TRX is obviously bulky for most of the country’s road network, so its natural habitat is out on the open where there is no paved tarmac in sight. It can move with the terrain using its long-travel Bilstein Blackhawk e2 adaptive shock absorbers along with a sophisticated five-link rear suspension system. When the 325mm-wide tires start to struggle for grip, the locking rear differential is there to get the TRX out of sticky situations.
All that madness outside is tempered with the spacious cab. Taking front and center is the 12-inch infotainment screen that runs the Uconnect 12.0 software with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and connected to 19 Harman Kardon speakers. Drivers will have no problem getting into the zone with the seven-inch instrument display and power-adjustable pedals. The TRX is also a proper workhorse with a 1.52m-long cargo box, interior and exterior power outlets, and a trailer hitch with a lighting connector.
Ownership of a 1500 TRX guarantees a bold and loud statement as well as exclusivity. And if you want to figuratively and literally stand out from the usual pickup crowd, just head over to your preferred Ram dealer to know more.
