The Mercedes-AMG One has once again shattered its own record at the Nurburgring-Nordschleife. Already recognized as the fastest production car around the famous track since October 2022, the One has just raised the bar even further.

Mercedes-AMG brand ambassador and DTM driver Maro Engel put down an officially verified lap time of 6:29.090 on the 20.832km long track, beating the previous record by over five seconds. This makes the One the first road car to break the 6:30 mark, and cements its standing as the most insane street-legal speed machine out there at the moment.

Two years ago, Engel and AMG put down an already impressive time, but the team mentioned that conditions weren’t perfect back then, with some sections of the track still damp for example.

So, they all knew that more was possible, and they didn’t rest until they could find that little bit more. On September 23, conditions were finally perfect, with cool air and warm asphalt giving the beast and its pilot the best chance yet to really put the hammer down 100%.

The result was a true lap of legends, with a car that was unchanged from the previous record run. Just the improved track conditions and more careful use of the vehicle’s complex hybrid system enabled the much faster lap time. Engel had to use the One’s Energy Flow Control (EFC) system to full effect, and manage energy recuperation and the electric boost effect perfectly to squeeze every last bit of power out of the German rocket ship.

The team also didn’t just rock up on the track and give it a go. As you’d expect from Teutonic engineers and their penchant for surgical precision, there was a lot of testing involved and even work on a simulator to prepare the car and the driver for the record run.

Then they just had to wait for the perfect day, and Maro had to put on his big-boy pants to burn a lap into the famous tarmac that will leave the competition scratching their heads. Now the big question is: Who will beat this time and when?
