Dolby Atmos is coming to Mercedes-Benz vehicles soon

Because normal surround-sound systems are simply not good enough

When one is about to purchase a vehicle, performance, comfort, fuel efficiency and dependability are just some of the top-of-mind concerns. But for an audiophile, a good OEM sound system is a must. That is why luxury carmakers and even some mass-market brands are starting to offer premium audio hardware on its vehicles. Mercedes-Benz is one of them.

While most car companies are using relatively reputable car audio brands on their models, Mercedes-Benz has partnered with another German powerhouse, Burmester. For the uninformed, the company makes high-end audio components for home and car applications. The latest S-Class has an entertainment system that has up to 26 speakers. However, the German automaker wants to take OEM car audio to the next level as it plans to offer Dolby Atmos on its products.

Set to debut on exclusive Maybach models, the Dolby Atmos-equipped system will have a total of 31 speakers. This includes six 3D speakers and an 18.5L subwoofer. Add eight sound transducers on the seats and two amplifiers, and what you get is 1,750W of pure aural pleasure. And with Dolby Atmos processing, you will get unprecedented musical clarity and depth.

Vehicles of mere mortals like us have the usual left and right channels with front and rear zones. However, a Dolby Atmos-certified system utilizes more audio channels that let you appreciate music the way artists do. While this could be a game-changer for audiophiles and enthusiasts, we suppose a good portion of Mercedes-Benz’s clientele wouldn’t be bothered.
