In 1973, BMW Motorrad released the R90 S, featuring an 898cc boxer engine, an adjustable hydraulic damper, and a bikini fairing. The sport bike boasted 67hp and a 200km/h top speed. A total of 17,455 units were sold from 1973 to 1976.
Along the way, it placed first and second at the first AMA Superbike race in 1976 at Daytona International Speedway. Hans-Otto Butenuth and Helmut Dähne also celebrated a class victory in the 1976 Production TT on the Isle of Man.
Paying homage to its illustrious forebear—mint examples of which command a very high price in the collectors’ market—the BMW R12 S is bestowed with a handlebar-mounted cockpit fairing with a tinted windshield, a seat with contrast stitching, and Lava Orange metallic paint finish as a nod to the R90 S Daytona Orange from 1975.

Other details include the red-laid ‘S’ on the side covers, the red double line, and the brushed and clear-lacquered aluminum surfaces of the tank and the seat hump. Standard equipment includes Option 719 Classic II wheels with wire spokes and anodized aluminum rims. The handlebars and the fork tubes are painted black, while the Shadow and Shadow II billet packs include the levers, the footrests, the cylinder head covers, and more.
Despite the retro style, the R12 S comes with hill-start control, Shift Assistant Pro, heated grips, and cruise control. It even comes with adaptive cornering light technology dubbed Headlight Pro.
And if you’re an avid BMW Motorrad fan and are already fantasizing about parking this beauty in your stable, our source says that it just might officially come to the Philippines soon.
