A newbie motorcycle rider’s love letter to his wife

Asking permission from the missus has never been this sweet

Motorcycles can be an extremely hard sell to significant others. As it should be—bikes, and cars for that matter, usually cost a substantial amount of money. They take up a lot of space, they can be dangerous, and did I already say they cost a lot of money? Not to mention the time needed to take these toys to the shop, modify and care for (and, of course, to enjoy them with like-minded peers). Time that could otherwise be spent taking our better halves out on dates, doing our share of chores at home, or worse, watching Hometown Cha-Cha-Cha while witnessing her swoon over Kim Seon-ho right in front of you. But I digress.

I know this all too well. Don’t get me wrong, though; my wife is a very reasonable woman. If I want to go out on a ride or buy something new, all I need to do is build my case. Outline my objectives, call on witnesses, cite precedents, and provide evidence admissible to her honor’s court of law. Easy-peasy, right? I am usually allowed out on bail while waiting for my sentence, and then subpoenaed later on to pay my dues. The summons usually comes in the form of an Instagram link to the latest fine-dining tasting menu in town. Anyway, the bottom line is, she always gives me the space to enjoy the things I am passionate about. And so, on this Valentine’s Day, I would like to show appreciation for my patient and understanding partner in life.

Here is my love letter for her.

Honey,

It is so often said that behind the success of every man is a woman. I reckon there should be a saying for women, too. And I suggest for it to be: Behind the anger of every woman is a man wondering what on earth he is saying sorry for this time.

I know I have said this before, but I just think it sums up our relationship quite nicely. As clueless and thick-skulled as I am, you’ve still managed to build this wonderful life for our family. I only have God and you to thank for everything that I am, and everything I enjoy in this life. Thank you for being the patient and generous wife who gives me the freedom to be my own person, to explore and pursue my love for motoring. There have been times when I have abused and exploited your patience by putting my work and hobbies before you, and I sincerely apologize for being so insensitive. Always know that my only prayer when out on rides is for God to bring me safely back home to you.

You are my official pillion passenger, my shotgun for eternity, my ride-or-die. And to that, I say thank you. Happy Valentines Day.

Love,
Your clueless husband

PS: Now, can I please go ride with my friends? Please? Please? I’ll be safe, I promise!

“Who can find a virtuous wife? For her worth is far above rubies. The heart of her husband safely trusts her; so he will have no lack of gain.” (Proverbs 31:10-11)
