The D9 premium electrified MPV gave us a good feel of Denza’s luxury

What is it like driving this classy vehicle?

Just in case you’ve been living under a rock somewhere, Chinese automotive brands have already established themselves in our market. In fact, BYD now ranks third overall in local car sales. Proof that quality, respectable after-sales performance, thoughtful marketing strategies, and dealership presence can be a true formula for success (even if AC Mobility has only been at it for over two years) alongside the older industry players.

Now, BYD Philippines has officially brought in its premium brand, Denza. Under the leadership of Denza Philippines country head Adam Hu, the brand is aimed at a more upscale market.

To get the ball rolling, Denza has now officially introduced the D9. A premium plug-in hybrid electric MPV that transports a family of seven in innovative style and exceptional comfort. We were able to briefly sample the D9 ahead of its launch, and I must say it is an impressive package.

The moment you approach the D9, it already makes its intentions clear. This is no ordinary family hauler. The massive grille up front, dressed with intricate chrome detailing, gives it a presence that feels more like an executive shuttle than a traditional MPV. It’s large and cleanly styled, and it carries itself with a certain confidence that suggests Denza isn’t here to beat around the bush.

Step inside and the luxury narrative continues. The cabin feels spacious and properly upscale, with soft-touch materials, supple leather, and elegant trim throughout, including real wood bits showing natural grain. But the real highlight is the second row.

Large captain’s chairs dominate the rear space, and they are clearly designed to make passengers feel like VIPs rather than mere occupants. Multiple electronic adjustments—along with ventilation and a 10-point massage feature—make long trips feel like you’re flying in business class. There’s even a smart beverage cabinet with a heating and cooling box within easy reach for second-row passengers.

Other niceties include adjustable zero-gravity seats, small touchscreen control panels found on the captain’s seat armrests, electric folding-tray tables, mobile-phone pockets with wireless charging on the sides of the captain’s seats, and adjustable reading lights. For your audio pleasure, the vehicle is equipped with a premium 14-speaker Dynaudio system with a 7.1-channel surround sound.

Technology and safety (featuring a full suite of ADAS tech) also play a big role in the experience. The dashboard layout is modern and uncluttered, anchored by a large 15.6-inch central touchscreen paired with a fully digital instrument display. Everything feels crisp and responsive, and the interface itself appears intuitive even during our short encounter. It’s the kind of setup you would expect from a premium brand trying to establish its upmarket credentials.

Of course, luxury means little if the drive itself doesn’t deliver. The D9 uses a plug-in hybrid powertrain that utilizes a 1.5-liter turbocharged gasoline engine that acts as a generator to charge the 40kWh battery that powers the front and rear electric motors (yes, it’s all-wheel-drive).

The D9’s propulsion feels fine-tuned, delivering an experience that is powerful yet smooth, and is never jolting. With a combined output of 401hp and 681Nm of torque, it’s certainly more than sufficient for a vehicle this size. Given the staggering rise in fuel costs due to the ongoing conflict in the Middle East, it is good to know that this MPV has a claimed combined total range of 980km with a pure electric range of 180km.

Ride comfort is another strong point. The suspension does a commendable job of smoothing out uneven surfaces, while cabin insulation keeps outside noise nicely subdued. As part of the driving activities, the vehicle was subjected to a speed bump course where it demonstrated superb body composure as the suspension gracefully took in all the bumps. Whether you’re driving or being chauffeured, the overall feel leans heavily toward stable comfort.

In totality, the D9 is well-equipped, thoughtfully designed, and clearly positioned to compete with established premium brands. Speaking of price, the D9 officially retails for P4,298,000, but will sell at a promotional cost of P3,998,000 for the first 300 buyers.

Denza’s opening move in the Philippine market is a strong one. The D9 shows that the brand is serious about delivering a luxury experience built around innovation, comfort, and modern electrified technology. For buyers looking for a premium MPV that offers something a little different from the usual suspects, the Denza D9 is worth short-listing.

For a closer look at the D9 MPV, you can visit any of Denza’s four showrooms located in Makati, Alabang, Greenhills, and Cebu.
