The Specialty Equipment Market Association Show, more popularly known as SEMA, is currently taking place at the Las Vegas Convention Center until November 8. While this trade show is meant for the aftermarket industry, that isn’t stopping manufacturers such as Toyota from showcasing just how wild their offerings can be.
TOYOTA GR86 RALLY LEGACY CONCEPT
The first is the GR86 Rally Legacy Concept, an off-road version of the sports car that’s bound to make World Rally Championship fanatics teary-eyed.
A livery inspired by the iconic red-and-green Castrol rally Celicas and Corollas of the past; a quad-lamp light pod; red mud flaps; rally wheels; a stripped-down interior with the necessary safety bits; and a large rear spoiler inspired by the ST205 Celica GT-Four.
Underneath lie the entire powertrain of a GR Corolla, the 1.6-liter turbo-three G16E-GTS, the manual transmission, and the GR-Four AWD drivetrain. The task of retrofitting everything wasn’t easy, but the folks at Evasive Motorsports managed to pull it off with aplomb.
The engine benefits from a performance intercooler, an oil cooler, and a race ECU, but the output was kept at 300hp and 370Nm. Tuning potential is there should they want to raise the power output.
Most of the chassis, the subframe, and the engine mounts of the GR86 had to be modified to accommodate the powertrain, and GR Corolla hubs, spindles, axles, and rear differentials were also carried over. Surprisingly, the front suspension and the steering rack of the GR86 were reused, albeit with significant modifications.
TOYOTA LAND CRUISER ROX
Next up is the Land Cruiser ROX, which is a top-down Land Cruiser 250/Prado.
Led by the Calty Design Research design studio in California, this is the team’s take on what a modern open-top Land Cruiser would look like.
While it may look like the rear half and top of an LC250 were lopped off, over half of the vehicle’s body panels had to be redone, complete with new stamping tools and molds to make the new parts, essentially making this a one-off “factory” vehicle.
Apart from your usual off-road modifications like rocker panels, bash plates, custom bumpers, and large off-road terrain tires, the open-air cabin has custom skeleton doors, a sliding soft top, a mid-gate passage for access to the truck bed from the cabin, and integrated tailgate seating.
TOYOTA RAV-X
Finally, the RAV-X is a reimagining of what a “small crossover” could do for the off-road enthusiast segment.
Taking a RAV4 PHEV as the basis, the Toyota Service Parts and Accessories Department (SPAD) utilized multiple 3D-printed aero, long travel suspension, custom 2.5-inch bypass shocks, reservoirs, forged aluminum front lower control arms and rear upper supports, and skid plates to turn a comfy family hauler into a capable mini Baja blaster.
