Lexus updates the IS again

The 12-year-old platform receives modifications to keep it relevant

The Lexus IS is such a great performance sedan. Since its debut in 1998, the Altezza-based rear-wheel-drive compact executive car has been selling well against its competitors.

The second-generation model banked on the success of the previous one, while the third generation carried on this tradition when it was introduced in 2013. Known as the XE30 in Lexus-speak, the car received updates in 2017 and 2020 to keep it current and, likely, to conceal its age.

It is that good that Lexus has been using the same platform for 12 long years—an eternity for passenger cars. Blame it on the popularity of crossovers, but a new platform won’t be coming anytime soon. It’s because the Japanese luxury automaker has done another refresh of the third-generation IS for 2025.

Outside, the car receives a new grille and bumper design that seem to take inspiration from the LBX subcompact crossover. The grille is now larger, and the bumper has chiseled aerodynamics on both ends, giving the face a more aggressive appearance.

The sides remain mostly unchanged, apart from new 18- and 19-inch wheel designs. The rear end, meanwhile, was virtually untouched, maintaining the same look from the 2020 facelift. There are eight available exterior finishes, including the new color called Neutrino Gray.

The interior updates are more noticeable. Behind a redesigned steering wheel is a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster that displays all essential vehicle information. This configurable display allows the driver to customize the layout to his or her preference.

The dashboard loses the analog clock for a larger 12.3-inch center display. The climate control buttons, display, and vents have been redesigned for a simpler, cleaner look.

The infotainment system’s hard buttons were eliminated, as well as the touchpad on the center console. Instead, there is a roller that controls the multimedia system’s volume. It’s the same place where the buttons for the heated and ventilated front seats can be found. A wireless smartphone charger is neatly tucked under the center stack.

New interior features include Forged Bamboo ornaments and a new color scheme called Prominence, which Lexus says is inspired by the glow of solar flares, giving the interior a sportier vibe.

The new IS only comes in three trim levels: the 300h, the 350, and the F Sport. All trims feature a revised power steering system that uses a variable gear ratio to provide a more consistent steering feel in different conditions.

There are two engine options: a 3.5-liter V6 producing 310hp and 380Nm of torque, and a 2.5-liter in-line-four engine with an electric motor generating 178hp and 221Nm of torque.

The V6 can be paired with an eight- or six-speed automatic transmission, while the hybrid uses a CVT.

Finally, the new IS comes with the upgraded Lexus Safety System+ suite of driver-assist features. The enhancements include Proactive Driving Assist, expanded functions for the Radar Cruise Control system, extended Road Sign Assist, new features for the Start Delay Notification system, Lane Change Assist, and the addition of the Advanced Drive support system.

The updated IS will be available in different markets by early 2026. Hopefully, we won’t have to wait long for its debut in the Philippines.

Is this refresh the final chapter for the beloved performance sedan, or is an all-new model on the horizon? For now, all we can do is wait and see.
