Late last year, BYD invited us to the southern region of China to visit its facilities and test-drive its latest offerings that weren’t sold in the Philippines yet. One of those models was the bright and tiny Seagull, now making its official debut locally.

With a 2,500mm wheelbase, the Seagull is an electric city car that dwarfs the Jetour Ice Cream. Its 30kWh lithium-ion phosphate battery pack churns out a respectable 74hp and 135Nm.

Unlike other Chinese city EVs, its Type 2 AC/DC port utilizes the international CCS2 format for maximum compatibility with major charging stations, where a full charge could offer a range of up to 300km.

Inside, the dashboard follows BYD’s Ocean lineup with its fluid-like motif and birdlike steering wheel similar to the Dolphin and the Atto 3. In line with its siblings, the Seagull has the brand’s signature rotating infotainment display, albeit in a smaller 10.1-inch form factor.

Other amenities include a seven-inch digital instrument cluster, a wireless charging port, 4G connectivity for over-the-air updates, and smartphone integration with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.

Its simple safety suite has a parking sensor, a rearview camera, and four airbags surrounding the interior—enough for a tiny EV with an introductory price of P898,000.

Does the sharp Seagull look like your first livable electric car?
