Suzuki Philippines is celebrating its 50th anniversary in the market this year, and it’s kicking off by debuting its subcompact sedan which has gone on sale since 2018. The new Dzire no longer resembles a Swift with a trunk, now carrying a unique fascia to call its own.

The new Dzire is now powered by a 1.2-liter four-cylinder engine mated to a 12V mild-hybrid system. While it keeps up with the electrified times, it maintains its modest power figures at 81hp and 112Nm, and measurements of 2,450mm long and 378L trunk capacity.

The most significant achievement of the Dzire is five stars in the Global NCAP crash tests. Previous Maruti Suzuki products have been a laughingstock regarding low standards in safety assessment, but this tiny sedan has six airbags and a stronger crumple zone.

The Dzire starts at P920,000 with the GL and comes standard with front and rear USB charging ports, parking sensors, a rearview camera, and a host of safety features including hill-hold control and brake assist function.

The top-spec GLX goes for P958,000 with the same amenities as the GL, but with LED headlights and fog lights, a guide-to-vehicle lighting system, a leather steering wheel, and a nine-inch infotainment screen.

Thanks to India's sub-4m tax benefit rule, sedans the size of hatchbacks will continue to conquer. PHOTOS BY JUSTIN YOUNG

While the jump in price from its predecessor is jarring considering its maintained size and power output, the added safety assurance makes the new Dzire a more desirable choice in its segment. Ready to snag one of these as your first car?
