A sign of a country’s true progress is when you look around and find how thoughtfully planned and organized things are. From well-designed infrastructure to manicured, clean landscapes and a healthy atmosphere to thrive in.
Despite massive development in both the commercial and residential sectors, the heart of our nation has somehow gone the opposite route. Our urban spaces have transformed into a jungle of sorts (not the kind that Tarzan would love to swing around in). A major issue? Spaghetti wires.

As visually appalling as it is, spaghetti wires pose a great safety risk to the urban community, motorists included. Among the greatest safety risks are poles/posts falling due to overloading and the chances of fires and electrocution. Thanks to Meralco, this issue is now being seriously addressed through its Anti-Urban Blight operations (AUB) across the metropolis.

Given the gargantuan scale of spaghetti wires, the AUB campaign is far from easy. It requires intensive cooperation between Meralco, local government units, and telecommunication companies (not to mention business owners and residents).

Meralco’s Foreign Attachments Management head Joseph David, whom we recently met during an ongoing AUB operation in Binondo, expressed the huge responsibility on his shoulders. David shared that it may look like an inconvenience for the time being, but it will definitely put things in proper order once completed, addressing both safety and aesthetic concerns.
His constant coordination with all involved will establish the adherence to authorized and proper installation of cables on Meralco’s posts moving forward. This will also deter illegal connections and installations.

Meralco corporate communications head and vice president Joe Zaldarriaga explained that the AUB campaign is focused on the well-being of the community. He shared that residents and vendors had expressed relief brought about by such operations, but the challenge isn’t over.
Zaldarriaga is calling out to the general public to communicate to Meralco and LGUs any concerns or issues in their respective locations so that these may be acted upon as soon as possible.

During the Binondo operation, we were joined by Manila mayor Isko Moreno, who is fervently supportive of the matter. Moreno said that the AUB campaign aligns with his mission to bring back the former glory the nation’s capital once had. He intends to see this through until all streets have been cleared.

As citizens and creative professionals, we strongly feel that it’s about time we put an end to spaghetti wires and clear up our streets. Our better future deserves this.
After all, if we truly love our place of abode and business, it goes without saying that we all want what is best. We are just glad Meralco initiated this. May this serve as a motivational example for the whole country to follow.
