LTO issues Show Cause Order to car owner for parking in bike lane

Thanks to a video on social media

Parked cars in the bike lane are nothing new on the streets of Metro Manila. That’s why it’s amusing to hear that the Land Transportation Office has issued a Show Cause Order over one such incident thanks to social media.

In a video by Bikers for a Cause, a Toyota Vios was shown parking in the bike lane in front of Shakey’s at P. Sanchez Street in Manila, complete with the hazard lights on. Despite the cameraman’s confrontation, the driver didn’t give a damn even if he was being recorded.

Vios driver: “What’s your problem?”

Video owner: “You see, I’m a cyclist.”

Vios driver: “What do I care? I’m waiting for my family.”

The driver could have used the parking spaces instead of obstructing the road. SCREENSHOT FROM GOOGLE MAPS

Now, the LTO is investigating to determine if the person in the video is also the registered vehicle owner. “Ito po ay pambabastos sa ating mga kasamahan sa bicycle rider community, at nagpapakita ng kawalan ng disiplina,” said LTO chief Vigor Mendoza.

Whoever the owner is, the LTO instructed him to explain why he should not be administratively charged for illegal parking. Failure to do so shall be “construed by this office as a waiver of your right to be heard, and the case shall be decided based on the evidence at hand,” as written in the SCO.

Here’s something to think about: Perhaps it isn’t the bike lanes that cause traffic, but rather the many cars parked on the streets.
