Managing train ride discounts for specific groups can be quite challenging. Verifying eligibility for discounts often results in long lines at train stations.

Fortunately, the Department of Transportation—in partnership with AF Payments Inc., the issuer of Beep cards—has found a solution to make things easier for commuters. According to a Facebook post, the agency has announced that starting September 15, students can obtain Beep cards with a 50% discount for train rides.

To apply, students need to present their valid school ID or registration form. Their Beep cards will then be issued immediately and will display the student’s name and the validity period.

These cards can be renewed each year. When renewing, students must show their registration forms at designated counters in train stations.

For senior citizens and persons with disabilities, AFPI has stated on its website that concessionary Beep cards will be available at all train stations. Members of these groups can also enjoy the special 50% discount on train rides and 20% off bus and modern PUV fares when using these special cards.

The cards are valid for four years, after which seniors and PWDs must renew them. To apply or renew, they need to show their valid senior citizen ID or PWD discount cards.

It’s important to get Beep cards directly from train stations, as AFPI has clarified that only cards issued at the LRT and the MRT are eligible for the special 50% fare discount on trains. Cards from other Beep offices only offer a 20% discount on both train and PUV fares.

On August 14, AFPI issued a statement supporting then DOTr Secretary Vince Dizon’s directive to increase supply and speed up the distribution of Beep concessionary discount cards for seniors, PWDs, and students during a visit to the LRT-2. AFPI has also increased the delivery of 300,000 additional cards for its train operator partners.

Although this technology isn’t new and is used in other countries, we commend the DOTr’s efforts to make commuting easier and more affordable for the public—especially those who badly need it.
