Long road, off-road, no road: A CFMoto 450MT 5,000km review

Is this really the unicorn adventure bike we’ve all been waiting for?

CFMoto’s global launch of the 450MT, specifically Palawan, was a grand affair, marking one of the major motorcycle launches in the country last year. The 450MT was highly anticipated, generating buzz in the adventure community.

Its lightweight design, accessible seat height, and twin-cylinder 270° crank parallel engine fueled this excitement.

Despite missing the global launch, I had the opportunity to openly and totally experience the 450MT on long-distance touring and tedious off-road activities that will definitely put this bike to the test.

CFMoto Philippines graciously lent me the 450MT for a pre-event shakedown, particularly the Negros Loop. I took the 450MT from Manila to Bacolod, traversing Mindoro, Panay, and the entire island of Negros.

On-road, the 450MT proved surprisingly agile for an adventure bike. The handling was precise, and the ergonomics felt dialed-in, especially with the standard suspension set to a stiffer configuration. The stock CST CM-A5 adventure tires impressed me with their grip and cornering confidence in both wet and dry conditions.

In terms of power, the displacement is enough for you to legally enter Luzon tollways, while it is more than enough for cruising through national roads and not too powerful when entering the trails.

In terms of purpose and ergonomics, it is a sporty middleweight adventure bike with a little bias on the trail versus comfortable long-distance touring. The stock seats resemble slim enduro bikes, and the silhouette bears a resemblance to a smaller version of the Yamaha Ténéré 700. It also echoes the same engine type as a 270° parallel twin-cylinder, if we’re talking about coincidence.

For the most part, the 450MT is a great on-road companion. However, when the fuel drops anywhere below the 50km range, the fuel indicator starts to blink empty. It would be nice to have better fuel range accuracy, especially for out-of-town trips.

The 450MT’s 17.5L fuel capacity translates to a range of at least 350km and potentially upwards of 400km.

In terms of speed, it can comfortably cruise at 100km/h and can top out at around 150km/h when tested on a controlled environment.

I could never think of any other event that would test the limits of big adventure bikes other than the FJ Moto Mountaincross Adventure. It is one of the most grueling motorcycle adventure events that will test your navigation and survival skills, with a focus on responsible riding and adherence to traffic rules.

Participants navigate to specific checkpoints via on- and off-road terrain, monitored by GPS, and risk disqualification over any traffic violations.

I was fortunate to join CFMoto Philippines’ official team for FJMMA. I customized the 450MT with essential upgrades. A CFMoto belly pan skid plate provided crucial protection. Loboo Motor Philippines supplied valuable gear, including the Wanderer Waterproof crash bar bag and a 30L expandable waterproof bag, both proving compact and durable in harsh conditions.

Loboo L7S auxiliary lights, with eight levels of brightness adjustment, were perfect for night riding. Finally, I swapped the stock tires for Motoz Tractionator adventure tires, designed to conquer challenging off-road terrains.

Over three days and two nights, the 450MT impressed with its comfortable ergonomics. The USB-C charging port and the clear, full-color TFT navigation system with a fuel range indicator were invaluable.

The manually adjustable windscreen effectively deflected wind at higher speeds. The foldable side mirrors come as stock, which proved valuable in the event that the bike fell down.

Recognizing the demanding terrain and the need to carry luggage, I softened the front and rear suspension settings. This adjustment significantly improved comfort, especially on rough sections.

Rain in Bicol tested the Motoz Tractionator tires, which performed admirably well in soft mud and deep dry lava. The Loboo bags kept my gear dry, and the adjustable auxiliary lights adapted to varying conditions.

While the 450MT excelled, I noted a couple of areas for improvement. The on/off-road setting switch could be more accessible for faster on-the-fly adjustments, as the current process is somewhat time-consuming.

I also believe that multiple ride modes (Street, Rain, Off-road, Enduro) would enhance the riding experience. Finally, electronic suspension adjustment would be a welcome addition, perhaps paving the way for a future “rally” version.

Despite some bruises and scratches, I finished the adventure with a deep sense of accomplishment. The 450MT, with the right setup and modifications, proved capable of tackling any terrain.

The engine performance is well-suited to the middleweight adventure segment, offering a satisfying twin-cylinder character. While some components may not feel premium, they are undeniably functional.

The price point is reasonable, offering excellent value for money. The displacement is ample for both highway riding and demanding off-road trails.

Collectively, the CFMoto 450MT is a true go-anywhere motorcycle. Its attractive price of P328,900 allows riders to personalize it with upgrades based on their specific needs.

While the stock version is already capable, CFMoto should consider developing a more specialized, beefed-up version—a 450MT Rally. Perhaps it’s just a matter of time.
