We don’t need to tell you that the most popular vehicle in our market right now—at least based on the marketing blitz that its manufacturer has launched to support its arrival—is the Philippine-assembled Toyota Tamaraw. And because it’s getting a lot of attention, anything that concerns it is guaranteed to be discussed on social media.
That includes an interesting experience shared by a vlogger in which he was flagged on the Skyway for driving the much-sought-after vehicle. He was told by the elevated highway’s traffic officer that the Tamaraw was not allowed on the Skyway since it was a four-wheel dropside pickup. Adding to the confusion, the officer said six-wheel dropside pickup trucks were allowed.
Naturally, this created online chaos as many car buyers lining up for the Tamaraw were surprised. But is the vehicle really prohibited on the Skyway? We asked SMC Infrastructure to officially put this debate to rest.
According to our contact at the firm: “The Toyota Tamaraw is allowed on the elevated section of the Skyway System, but if the Tamaraw dropside is loaded with cargo, it has to be secured properly using a safety belt and covered appropriately with a canvas or similar material. This is to ensure that no loose items or debris will fall onto the carriageway and risk the safety of motorists.”
It’s as simple as that. If you’re a Tamaraw owner/driver and a Skyway marshal bothers you, just show this statement from SMC Infra.
For good measure, we also asked the company which types of vehicle are not allowed on the Skyway. Here is the answer, straight from the operator:
- Class 3 vehicles
- Public-utility jeepneys
- Modified/four-wheeled closed vans
- Vehicles loaded with agricultural and/or fishery commodities
- Vehicles with unsafe load or no canvas cover
- Motorcycles with an engine displacement below 400cc
- Vehicles that are visibly dilapidated and not roadworthy
- Vehicles that are unsafely towing trailers with either a jet ski, motorcycle, boat, or golf cart
So there. Enjoy your brand-new Toyota Tamaraw on the Skyway. Just secure and cover your cargo on the dropside bed.
